rebecca malope’s gonna save my life

next week, my very very last week in advertising in this cycle of my work life, will be quick. i’ll not only be in preproduction on a certain 40″ FMCG potato snack ad i’ll also be on a day’s shoot with REBECCA MALOPE the littlest biggest selling music artist in all of south africa. a day out of the office with rebecca baybay. thats what i mean by rebecca malope’s gonna save my life.

becca, as i’ve now decided to call her, is a multi platinum selling [whatever that really means]  songstress and almost midget. she also has the biggest, most distinct voice you’ll ever hear. she turned to god or rather money quickly quadrupling her cash worth after she decided to sing gospel after a mildly successful pop album debut in the early 90s. after almost 30 years in the industry she’s racked up a large ball and chain of scandals but no one really cares, well no one in all her many millions of devoted christian and non christian fan base cares. reports say cocaine, crack, booze and toy boy freak!!! she says WHAT cocaine, WHAT crack, WHAT booze WHAT toy boy ???

becca is also known for her acrobatic stage routines: floor rolling, delirious staggering, holy spirit jerks, eye’s rolling back into the head, hands flailing, twirls, hops, skips and a jump and the odd tear or full on weep. she’s a top notch drama diva and altogether awesome. i’m keen for it. the shoot that is. trying to get her to read a script won’t be nearly as painful as getting bab’ Joseph Tshabalala from ladysmith black mambazo to respond in english.

we’re shooting sometime next week with John Barker, director of the famous 90s PURE MONATE SHOW who also happens to be SA football coach clive barker’s son. a random fyi.

check out the video if you’d like to see Rebecca lurking in a cemetery, hugging tombstones, playing pied piper to a hoard of devotees dressed in white, defending a lovely church and fighting fire all the while on the brink on a nervous breakdown.

wanted to also post her early pop video but i couldn’t find it on the tube. youtube should improve their search system. now.

ad made

last month i shot my tv ad for the year like a good ad person should. we fought for 5 months to get the script ready and approved. we fought so hard to get this ad done that the friday before the shoot weekend me, my art director, the agency md and executive creative director drunkenly prostituted ourselves to the newly appointed and very difficult woman-loathing ceo of cell c and his skivvy to get a final go ahead. all worth it though. I had the chance to work with kim geldenhuys, one of the best commercials directors in south africa and maybe the world, learned a lot and had fun in cape town doing it. below are the boards and reference stills for the commercial. now that its on air  i’ll post the actual ad. i’m 93.5% satisfied with it. it feels amazing to see something you doodled and scribbled come alive but the whole experience has made me realise how rare true creative satisfaction is. i am not a perfectionist but i do like this to be perfect. and this ad for me is pretty alomost not quite but a lot-ish close. it also marks my ad exit. more on that when i actually make the leap.
